Nyepi or known as Day of Silence which marks Balinese New Year. It is celebrate every Isakawarsa or Saka new year. The island would fall silent for 24 hours every year. There will be no flights, activites, fire nor electricity. The Balinese honor the new year with stillness and silent.

They believed by doing it so, it would avoid from harm when demons and gods fly overhead due to they think that it is uninhabited.

However, as outdoor activities and other activities related to cook are limited, you can do below activities while you are stay at your Villa. Here’s we curate some of activities to do if you happen in Bali during Nyepi:

1. Yoga and Meditation

It is believed that Yoga and meditation are good to decrease stress and anxiety. While the phone is not connected to the internet, perhaps it is good to get away from phone for awhile and do meditation and/or yoga in the midst of tranquil and beauty villa.

2. Join Offering Making Class

Canang Sari is an offering that made by Hindu Balinese to thank the Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa in praise and prayer on daily basis. It is common to see in Hindu temple, small shrines at house or even on the ground.

You may sometimes wondering how the Balinese create their offering and what should to be included and what shouldn’t. The Annual International Cleanup 2019 – Big Effort for Trash Free Ocean

The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) began in 1986, catalyzed by two committed individuals, Linda Maraniss and Kathy O’Hara. They planned the first ocean conservancy’s clean up by reaching out general land office, local business and other ocean lovers. Today, there is more than 100 countries that participate in this program each year.

According to Bali Hotels Association, the ICC held and took place in many different places which are Menjangan Island, Tabanan, Canggu Berawa, Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur, Ubud , Legian, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Karangasem, Klungkung, and Lembongan Island. This program has main purpose to educate and bring awareness to the employee on the importance of conserving the environment, principally to support Bali as the most popular tourism destinations in Indonesia.

There are six beaches along coastline in Canggu. Finns Beach Club stands as the principle coordinator of ICC in all Canggu area, and Ametis Villa is coordinator of Nelayan, Batu Bolong and Batu Mejan beach.

On last Saturday, 21st September 2019, ICC annual event was successfully conducted at beaches around Bali. At our cleanup site(3 beaches), total 218 volunteers from 22 companies and organizations* has participated, including local village authority such as Klian Adat (Chief of tradition), Klian Dinas Canggu (Chief assistant of governmental administration in Canggu village), Perbekel Canggu Village (Governmental administration in Canggu Village), North Kuta subdistrict Head, and Jaga Baya Canggu (Canggu village security) who encouraged participants. Ametis Villa has provided meal, snacks, water and biodegradable waste bag to volunteers.

At the end of the cleanup event, trash was separated into each category. From the data, total collected non-organic trash was 12.4kg, which was decreased at 8.6kg against last year 21kg. It shows that the international coastal cleanup has successfully brought awareness to everyone to maintain the cleanliness of beaches. Furthermore, prohibition of single plastic bag usage by the local government really helps reducing the number of plastic waste in Bali.

Things to do During Nyepi in Canggu

            Nyepi can be one of the most unique experiences that you can experience in Bali. It’s one of the most enjoyable 24 hours with clean air and ‘zero emissions’, when nature takes a rest free from human activity. The new moon also offers rare night skies without light pollution to enjoy. Here are some of our recommendations to keep you occupied while the Island of the Gods shuts down for a day!

  • Watch The Melasti Procession

            Melasti is a Balinese purification ceremony and ritual, this ceremony is usually held 1 or 2 days before the silent day or Nyepi Day. During melasti, village communities (or banjar) travel together to their closest source of holy water, some of them might be going to a holy spring and the others might choose to going to the beach. Batu bolong beach is the nearest beach from Ametis, and usually village communities near our Bali beach villa will go to Batu Bolong Beach by walk.

  • Enjoy the parade of ogoh ogoh

            Ogoh – ogoh (paper-madestatue) normally have form of mythological beings, mostly demons.  Represents spiritual aims inspired by Hindu philosophy. The main purpose of the making of Ogoh-ogoh is the purification of the natural environment of any spiritual pollutants emitted from the activities of living beings (especially humans). The village communities around Ametis usually start their parade from 17:00 pm, you probably can see 1 – 2 ogoh ogoh during this parade.
